Sometimes the Morning Grogginess Was Worse Than Not Sleeping at All.

I was choosing between two versions of exhausted. Nobody told me there was a third option.

Two years of picking which kind of tired I wanted

On a bad night I got four hours and spent the next day running on coffee and spite. By two in the afternoon my body was asking to lie down on the floor of my own kitchen. Not the couch. The floor, because it was closer.

So I would take something.

And on those nights I slept, and I woke up into a different problem. Heavy. Slow. Head in the next room. It took me until eleven to properly arrive, and by then the morning was gone.

Those days were worse. That is the part I could not say out loud for a long time, because it sounds ungrateful.

I slept, and the day still was not mine.

The morning it stopped being about sleep

My daughter left a cereal bowl on the counter and I said something to her in a voice I had never used on her. Not shouting. Flat and tight, the voice you use when there is nothing left and you have decided that is somebody else's fault.

She picked up her bag and went out to the bus.

I stood in the kitchen holding a bowl, and I had taken something the night before. I had done everything right. I had slept.

That was the morning I worked out I was not chasing sleep. I was chasing the next day, and every route I knew to one wrecked the other.

What I got told instead

Take less. Take it earlier. Try half.

And before anyone suggests it, yes. Cool room, no screens, same bedtime, no coffee after noon, the whole list. I can recite that list. Everybody can recite that list. It is not the list.

So I did the arithmetic every single night for two years. Do I want to be wrecked tomorrow because I did not sleep, or wrecked tomorrow because I did?

And every few weeks whatever I was taking would quietly stop working anyway, so I would move on to the next thing and start the same calculation over.

I was not shopping for sleep. I was shopping for a smaller bill.

I had a suspicion. What I did not have was a reason.

By then I half suspected the problem was the pills themselves, but I could not have told you why, and every time I said it out loud somebody told me I was just sensitive to things.

I brought it to Dr. Natasha Mason, who works almost entirely on menopausal sleep, mostly to be told I was imagining it.

She said I was not.

Dr. Natasha Mason

You are right that it is the ingredient and not you. Melatonin, valerian, 5-HTP. They sedate, they have long tails, and you feel them the next day. Sedation and sleep are not the same thing, and the difference is what you have been paying for every morning.

Two years. One sentence.

The hangover was not a side effect I got unlucky with. It was the mechanism doing exactly what that mechanism does.

Sedating a night and settling one are two different jobs

This is the distinction I wish somebody had drawn for me in year one, because once you have it you cannot buy the same way again.

Sedation shuts the night down and then wears off on its own schedule, which is rarely the same as yours. That is why it is still on you at nine. Settling lets the night happen and is finished with you by the alarm.

Almost everything on the shelf does the first one, and I understand why. You feel sedation on night one. That is a much easier thing to sell than something you notice a week later.

So I stopped asking what would put me to sleep and started asking what would settle a night without sedating it.

What that looks like on a label

The reason the one she showed me does not carry into the morning is not a claim on the front of the jar. It is what is missing from the panel on the back.

No melatonin. No 5-HTP. No valerian. The three ingredients that carry the morning are the three that are not in it. Not as a selling point. As the consequence of building it the other way.

What it uses for the getting-under part is L-theanine at a full 200 mg with magnesium. Nothing in there is built to knock me down, and that is the whole reason nothing in there is still sitting on me the next day.

The rest is aimed at what pulls you back out later, which for me was the heat and the wide awake at two. Sage and rhapontic rhubarb for the temperature, magnolia bark and saffron for the sudden alert.

Eight actives. Every dose printed. No proprietary blend, so I could read it against my own list instead of guessing.

What to expect, and when

This is the part I keep repeating to people, because it is the part that would have made me quit.

Dr. Natasha Mason

The mornings come back first, and fast, inside about a week. The nights take longer. The temperature side is slowest, four to twelve weeks. If you judge this at day seven you are judging a quarter of it.

She was right, and in that order.

WHAT CAME BACK, AND WHEN

Week 1 The nights had barely changed. But I got up and I was just up. No climbing out, no waiting for my head to arrive. That happened before anything else did, and it is the only reason I kept going.
Wks 2-4 Waking up stopped turning into being awake. I would surface, register that it was dark, and go back down without running the next day first.
Week 6 The heat went quiet. I cannot tell you which night, which apparently is normal. You notice it the way you notice a noise that stopped.
Week 10 The afternoons stopped having a hole in the middle, and I stopped deciding at breakfast what I was going to have to give up.

What I was already spending

I hesitated over the price, and I want to say that plainly, because I think a lot of women do and then feel stupid about it.

Then I put it next to the rest of it. The appointments I moved. The friend who stopped asking. An amount of coffee I am not going to write down. Two years of buying the next thing at thirty or forty dollars a go, every time one of them quit on me.

I had been paying for this the whole time. I just was not paying anyone.

In October I drove up the shore

Two hours there and back, on a Saturday, with my daughter.

I had stopped doing that drive. Not because I did not want to, but because by the afternoon I did not trust myself on that road.

She talked the whole way and I heard all of it.

I am not asking for much here and I never was. A bit of time with my kid, a bit of time on the house, a bit that is mine. That was the entire list, and for two years it was out of reach because every night I had to pick which half of the next day to lose.

I do not make that choice anymore. That is the difference, and it is the only one I was ever after.

If you are sleeping fine, none of this is for you.

But if you know that feeling of waking up into something you have to climb out of, the question worth asking is not whether a thing will get you to sleep.

It is what it takes off you the next morning, and that answer is printed on the back of the jar.

The guarantee runs as long as your supply does
